Do Meal Replacements Help You Lose Weight?

As a nation we are very unhealthy.  Obesity is epidemic.  Some people gain weight because they work long hours at sedentary jobs, eat unhealthy food on the run, or they get insufficient exercise.   Some people eat because they are lonely, bored, tired or have other emotional issues.  Food can be an addiction.  There are some groups that can help with this addiction for example over eaters anonymous.

This addiction is harder to treat than others because you cannot go ‘cold turkey’ from food.  You need to learn healthier ways of feeding yourself.

Some people do well on meal replacements this gives you the nutrients you need without the ritual of a real meal.  In some people this will help them.  Meal replacements control the hunger, fill you up but don’t have a lot of calories.   Meal replacements usually ask you to have one meal a day.

The downfall of this program is that it doesn’t teach you how to eat for the rest of your life.  It is a quick fix.  You need to create healthy habits. The concern is that once you go back to eating real food, you might relapse and find that your problems with controlling your food are still there.  If you don’t take the time to learn new habits you will gain the weight back.

You cannot use shakes for a meal replacement in the long term because they are designed to give you the smallest level of calories and nutrition.

If you know that your problem with food resembles is a habit or compulsion, it may be worth your while to think about using meal replacements for a while in order to lose some weight and work toward integrating regular food back in.  Use this time to shrink your stomach down so that you won’t be overwhelmed by hunger.  Work on your eating issues so that you can find a long term solution.
