Sleep Apnea Remedies.

Sleep apnea prevents you from breathing properly, and wakes you up at night. This condition can lead to heart disease and other serious ailments.   Sleep apnea can be life threatening if left untreated.  Consult your doctor before beginning any diet or treatment. 

There are two types of sleep apnea.  The type called Central Apnea is caused by the brain’s messages that stimulate regular breathing while sleeping not reaching the body.   The other type is Obstructive Sleep Apnea this is caused by an airway blockage during sleep, often it is fat pushing down on the neck.  With this type of sleep apnea breathing is compromised even when the person wakes up.  It often takes a shift in position to clear the blockage. 

Smoking and drinking can also suppress your breathing, if you have sleep apnea it is highly recommended that you quit both these habits until the condition is resolved.

One way of temporarily protecting your airway is to sew a tennis ball into the back of your pajamas so that you cannot sleep on your back.  This method forces you to sleep on your side or stomach relieving the gravitational pressure on your windpipe.

Some people may find relief from raising the head of the bed a few inches or investing in a sleep apnea wedge pillow.  A lot of people have had success with this method.

If your sleep apnea is moderate to severe your doctor will suggest wearing a mask with a c-pap attachment (c-pap stands for continuous positive airway pressure).   They may recommend a bipap (bi level positive airway pressure) mask.  Either of these masks will maintain an open airway and allow you to get a good nights sleep.

Some doctors recomend oral prosthetics.  These force the airway to stay open. 

Surgery is an option for some people suffering from sleep apnea.  In this surgery the doctor removes the uvula, tonsils or the adenoids to widen the airway.

You need to discuss your options with your doctor to decide which method would work the best for you.
